Buyer’s checklist:

Step 1 :

Gather your t-shirts.

Make sure you have enough “sides” that can be made into “squares” for the quilt size that you want.

A t-shirt with a design only on the front will be made into 1 square.

A t-shirt with designs on both the front and back of a t-shirt can be made into 2 squares.

If you are short on design squares, a side without a design can be made into a square as well.

Allowed garments include the following:   t-shirts, sweatshirts,  tech fabric, flannel, fleece. (See longer list below.)

DO NOT cut shirts unless I instruct you to do so.

Step 2 :

Make sure all of the shirts are freshly laundered without fabric softener.

Step 3 :

If you would like the squares placed in a specific order, label the t-shirts with row and column numbers.  (For example, pin a piece of paper that says “row 1, column 3” on that side of the shirt.)

Step 4 :

Fill out the form on the Book a T-shirt Quilt page.

You will then receive an estimate and instructions on how to deliver the shirts. A deposit payment (min. $100) is required before work can begin on the quilt.

Will you accept this shirt?

Accepted Fabrics and Articles of Clothing:

  • t-shirts

  • sweatshirts

  • tech fabrics (Dri Fit, etc.)

  • fleece

  • scrubs

  • backs of polos & button-down shirts (where there is only fabric & no buttons, zippers, or snaps)

  • fronts of polos & buttons-down shirts may be used only if buttons, zippers, or snaps have been removed & the edges sewn down. (I can do that work for you, but there is an extra charge.)

  • knit sweaters depending on the thickness

  • denim, jeans, or canvas depending on the thickness

Accepted, but with an extra charge for the custom work:

  • undersized tank tops, V-necks, jerseys, and pinnies (fabric must be added to make a large enough square)

  • embroidered letters or emblems (special attention is needed when longarming because of the thickness of the area)

  • removing buttons and zippers

Not generally accepted

  • letter jackets

  • down

  • silk

  • wool

  • leather

  • Lycra (leotards, swimwear)

  • Fabric with any 3-D feature that cannot be removed or worked around (snaps, sequins, beads, rhinestones, gathered fabric).

The quilt making process.

Description of the Quilt Making Process:

  1. T-shirt fronts and backs are cut apart.

  2. Interfacing is ironed onto t-shirts to keep the material from stretching.

  3. Squares are cut from the front and/or back of the t-shirts.

  4. Squares are sewn together to form the quilt top.

  5. The backing fabric is laundered and sewn to the correct size.

  6. The 3 layers (quilt top, batting, backing) are loaded onto a longarm quilting frame.

  7. The 3 layers are sewn together with the chosen design & then removed from the longarm quilting frame.

  8. Extra backing fabric and batting are trimmed from the quilt.

  9. Binding is added to the raw edges of the quilt.

  10.  Customer receives an invoice for the final cost, less the deposit.

  11.  Once payment is received, the completed quilt will be delivered or mailed to the recipient.
