Professional Longarm Quilting Services

Welcome to Quilting Cats Studio!

My name is Faith Patterson and I provide digital edge to edge longarm quilting services.

  • “Edge to edge” means that the same design is stitched across the entire quilt.

  • “Digital” means computer controlled and therefore many amazing designs are possible.

I would be honored to help you finish your beautiful quilt. My goal is to enhance the beauty of your quilt top by providing texture and a quilting design that makes your quilt top shine.

For specifics about how this process works, keep reading below.

To learn more about me and my business, see the About page.

Price

Price = Quilting Labor + Batting + Thread

Quilting labor

Labor cost is based on the size of your quilt. For example, if your quilt top is 60” x 80”, (60x80 = 4800 square inches) then a $.025 design would cost $120 for labor.

I charge $.025 or $.03 per square inch based on the density of the stitching and the complexity of the design.

Minimum labor charge

My minimum labor charge is $50. If your quilt measures smaller than the minimum charge, consider combining projects by using the same backing.

Batting

Batting Options

You may purchase batting from me. I carry the following batting types:

  • Quilters Dream 80/20 Cotton/Polyester, Natural

  • Quilters Dream 80/20 Cotton/Polyester, White

  • Quilters Dream 100% Polyester

  • Quilters Dream 100% Cotton

My blog post has information on how to choose the right batting: https://www.quiltingcatsstudio.com/mywork/batting

Backing

Backing Size

The backing needs to measure 8-10” larger than both the length and the width of the quilt top. For example, a quilt top measuring 60” x 80” requires a backing no smaller than 68” x 86” and preferably at least 70” x 90”.

Seamless and Seamed Backings

Seamless backing fabric is a longarmer’s best friend, because the backing will be rolled up onto the frame. However, I know that that is not always possible.

When piecing a backing, please keep the following in mind.

  • Use as few seams as possible.

  • Trim off any selvage before sewing the seam.

  • Make the seam wide — 5/8 to 1/2 inch.

  • Stitch seam with a slightly smaller stitch length and back stitch to secure the edges.

  • Press the seams open.

I do accept backings made from scraps and orphan blocks, but I cannot guarantee perfect alignment of every seam on the back since I am unable to watch it as it is being stitched.

See the Preparing Quilt Top page for a checklist.

Thread

Type of Thread

I stock strong, high quality Premo-Soft & Glide thread from Fil-Tec in many neutral and primary colors. Unless you make a special request, I will match the thread to the lightest background color in the quilt top. The top and bobbin thread will always be the same color.

Thread Cost

My computer keeps track of how much thread is used. You will be charged only for the thread used on your quilt and not by the spool.

Other Services

Trimming Service

Without trimming service, the quilt is returned to you with the extra batting and backing fabric still attached.

With trimming service, I will square the corners and trim off the excess batting and backing fabric so that the quilt is ready for binding. See the longarm price estimator for your particular quilt top, but generally, it works out to $10 for baby/lap quilts, $15 for medium/queen, $20 for king size.

Binding Services

If you want to receive a totally completed quilt, you can use my binding services. I can complete merely part of the process for you as well.

Binding options include:

  • using binding that you send me that is already seamed, ironed in half, and ready to attach to the quilt

  • making the binding from cloth you send me or from my own cloth

  • machine stitching the binding to the front of the quilt so that you can complete the process of hand or machine sewing it to the back

  • machine stitching the binding to both the front and back of the quilt so that you have a totally completed quilt. The final stitching will be in the ditch on the front and along the edge of the binding on the back.

Labels for back

Look on the Labels Page for pictures and prices for adding a label to the back of the quilt.

Use the longarm price estimator for charges for these services.

Meeting or Shipping

Receiving your quilt top and backing

I am located in Wendell, NC, and can connect face-to-face with you if you live in Wake or nearby counties. We can meet at the Farmhouse at Wendell Falls, at a Capital Quilters guild meeting, or at any other location convenient to both of us.

Otherwise, I am glad to receive shipped orders. I provide a mylar bag with a prepaid shipping label to make shipping as easy as possible. (You only have to pay return shipping.) Simply request a mylar bag when you fill out the Book a Quilt form.

Return shipping

If you are not local, your completed project with any leftover materials will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Tracking and $100 of insurance are included. More insurance or other services can be added at your request.

The shipping charge is based on weight and distance from Wendell, NC. With my business discounts, I can typically ship a 7 lb Full/Queen size quilt for $12-$15 within a 300 mile distance and $16-$20 within 1000 miles. Costs are higher during the 3 months before Christmas.

If you live outside North Carolina, you will not be charged sales tax, which often covers the return shipping cost.

This return shipping cost will be added to your invoice.

Estimates & Payments

Estimates

You may use the Longarm Price Estimator page to get an idea of costs for various sizes of quilts.

During the Book a Quilt process, you will receive a final estimate for the cost of your project via email. If for any reason, the final cost will be different from the emailed estimate, I will contact you before moving forward.

Possible additional charges

  • Quilt backing not 8” larger in width and length than quilt top

  • Seams on the edge of the quilt top coming loose

  • Extreme excess fullness on edges of quilt top

  • Backing seams not ironed open and trimmed of selvage

Invoices

Upon completion of your quilt, I will email you an invoice. Payment can be made through venmo, bank transfer, or locally with check or cash. Credit card payments have an added 3% surcharge.

North Carolina sales tax will be added to all transactions made within the state of North Carolina. NO tax will be charged on quilts delivered to other states.
